HMA Partnership in Honduras
HMA partners with Friends of Education, Honduras for several reasons. First, an increased level of education equates to healthier individuals and their families. Additionally, part of the
"Friends" program includes improved nutrition with schools, grain silos to protect government-provided food stores, local dental services for children with immediate needs, and support for health clinics at rural schools.
A long-term benefit of this partnership is educating potential future health care professionals. Through the Futures program, supported by Friends of Education, Honduras, a girl can attend a special high school to become an auxiliary nurse or she may choose to enter a similar nursing program after high school. Practical nursing programs are available and professional nursing programs at university require a high school diploma. The Futures program opens the doors of opportunity for young girls and women impoverished rural communities who would otherwise not be educated beyond 6th grade. With education more doors open for employment in health-related fields.
